Train For Performance, Not Physique

Train For Performance, Not Physique

Introduction

In the world of fitness, there's a longstanding and stubborn misconception that the pursuit of an aesthetically pleasing physique should be the ultimate goal. However, focusing solely on appearance neglects the broader spectrum of benefits that come with training for performance. This blog will highlight three key areas, which I think demonstrate why training for performance triumphs over training for physique.

1. Functionality

Unlike physique-focused routines that often prioritise packing on size for the sake of it, training for performance requires a holistic approach, covering aspects such as strength, agility, flexibility, and endurance, to excel in your specific sport or event. This approach enhances not only your physical capabilities on race/game day, but transcends into your day-to-day life, improving your ability to tackle everyday tasks. There’s no point looking like a Ferrari, if you have the engine of a lawnmower, and no fuel in your tank to go anywhere.

2. Nutrition

Optimal performance goes hand in hand with proper nutrition. Unlike crash diets or restrictive eating plans aimed solely at achieving a specific physique, performance-based nutrition focuses on fuelling the body for optimal function and recovery. This entails consuming a balanced diet rich in lean proteins, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, and essential nutrients. By nourishing the body for performance, individuals experience sustained energy levels, improved recovery times, and enhanced athletic performance. This is a far cry from the temporary fixes and ‘if it fits your macros’ approach to nutrition often associated with physique-driven diets.

3. Sustainability

Perhaps the most significant advantage of training for performance is its emphasis on sustainability. Rather than chasing short-term aesthetic goals that often lead to burnout or injury, performance-focused training promotes a longer-term approach to health and fitness. It prioritises consistency, progression, and skill development, laying the foundation for future success. By focusing on mastering new skills, setting performance-based goals, and cultivating a positive mindset, individuals create sustainable habits that extend far beyond the gym. This long-term approach to fitness not only yields superior results but also fosters a lifelong commitment to health and well-being.

Summary

Training for performance offers a multifaceted approach to fitness that extends beyond mere aesthetics. Being fit and healthy isn’t about whether you have a six-pack or not, it's about how you feel and function in every aspect of life. However, it’s rather ironic that if you do train for performance, you often achieve a good physique as a by-product of your efforts anyway, so cut out the middle man people.
